Me again...

Ok, this is the last thing, I promise....  But do you other sellers out there offer a discount when a customer asks you for one?

I am asked this question regularly in my Findings Shop, and every once in awhile in my jewelry shop.

I don't know.  It's weird.  Me personally, I don't think to ask for a discount unless I am buying say $ 200 worth of beads or cabs.  I kinda don't think it's the thing to do....

But, different strokes for different folks, and it never hurts to ask right?  I mean my husband embarrasses me on a regular basis by asking for discounts pretty much everywhere we go.  (love you honey!) lol
So, it doesn't really annoy me or anything, I just wonder if it's the thing to do.

Should I feel obligated to give a discount just because someone asked?  Should I feel guilty if I say no?  I don't know.

What's your policy?

  1. Wait. you have a Findings shop? how do i not know this??
I have been asked to do this before. And I usually comply because I'd rather sell something than not sell something. But that's just me.

  2. Personally I am happy for a customer who buys a ton from me to give them discount/free shipping etc and I do all the time But someone new....just coming to ask this before buying....no I don't really like it, I want to make this a business and maybe in the UK its not such a done thing.... or Maybe its just me?

    1. Yes! Repeat customers, large orders, I like to offer free shipping too. But orders under $ 20? not so much! Thanks for your input Jo!

  3. You know, it's really funny: I woke up to a convo regarding this on etsy this am. The lady wanted to know if she bought 5 of my knit hearts (at $4.50 each- WITH free shipping included) could she get a discount. A valid q, like you said, but I declined and explained that my profit is too low for a discount on items like this (not to mention the free shipping thing). I mean, if she wanted 50, then I probably would have obliged her.

You know, some people just want to guilt you into doing it I think. And sometimes it's hard to resist, but I really think, that to maintain our integrity as handmade artists we have to say no, unless it absolutely makes sense, you know?

    1. Amen! You have those hearts priced really reasonably and free shipping? The nerve to ask for a discount! Good on you for saying no. In fact I used the very same rationale the other day in my findings shop. I feel like I have my prices really reasonable. I just can't offer a discount for smaller orders... Thanks for chiming in Nancy!

  4. I too have had this question and I only offer a discount if they buy in quantity or it's a really good repeat customer. Tell her "sure" if you buy several items....your designs are already very reasonably priced.

On another matter...how come I just noticed your nice reply right under each comment....how'd you do that?

  5. I've even been asked to give a discount on sale items!! So I told her that I couldn't really do more than I was, but I offered to round down the prices to whole numbers, so instead of something for $74, I made it to $70. It satisfied her and she bought the items she wanted and I didn't lose too much more.
