You can do what you want to when you're an adult...

Well, that's what we tell the kids sometimes when the complain that they don't want to do something they've been asked to do.  But I was thinking about that.

Do we ever really get to do what we want when we're adults?  I guess it's yes and no.  Lately I have been feeling a little pressure from life.  It could be any number of things, but I do have a little bit of sadness and longing for the days when I really could do what I wanted to do.

You know how it is.  Boring everyday stuff that has to be done.  Laundry, dishes, toilets, floors, cooking, etc.  Running the kids here and there.  Listening to them argue.  And to be honest a lot of the times I just don't really want to do most of those things.  Except running the girls around.  I really don't mind that.  But be done they must, and so I do them.  And then there are only a few hours to do what I really want to do.

So, maybe I shouldn't tell the kids that you can do what you want when you're an adult.  Maybe I should just tell them to get used to it.   Actually, my favorite thing to tell them when they cry that they don't want to do something (like practice the piano), I tell them that I do things everyday that I don't really want to do and that's just the way it is.

I wish it wasn't that way though.   I sometimes wish I had a bottomless well of joy to be applied to every task.  I think that right now my well is running a little low on joy, but I'm hoping for a refill soon....

  1. I can absolutely relate. I told my husband the other day I was tired of being the responsible adult! :)

  2. There really are pros and cons to being an adult. As kids, we can't wait to grow up and then can't help but wonder, "why all the hurry". I am sure it will get better for you.

  3. Yuk. You know, not only is it that we HAVE to do some stuff, but our mood about doing them fluctuates. One day I find myself cleaning the toilet with a smile, the next I feel rage about who left it a mess! I think it's nice to reward yourself though, when you're starting to feel like that by just doing something fun, even something small.
